The CZ 457 series has established itself as the premier platform for bolt-action rimfire enthusiasts, but with over a dozen configurations available, shooters often ask: which specific model is the most accurate? While every 457 shares the same refined bolt-action receiver and adjustable trigger, certain models are factory-tuned with specialized barrels and chambers to deliver world-class, sub-MOA performance. For the shooter seeking the absolute pinnacle of CZ accuracy, the search begins and ends with two specific variants: the MTR and the LRP.

The Accuracy Foundation: The Match Chamber

To understand why certain CZ 457 models outperform others, you must look at the chamber. Most standard CZ 457 models (like the American or Lux) use a “Sporting” chamber, designed to reliably cycle a wide variety of ammunition, including budget-grade rounds.

However, the high-accuracy models utilize the CZ Match Chamber. This chamber is cut to much tighter tolerances, ensuring that the bullet is seated firmly against the rifling when the bolt is closed. This “engraving” of the bullet eliminates the “jump” across the throat, resulting in significantly more consistent ignition and tighter groups when using match-grade ammunition like Lapua Center-X or SK Rifle Match.

1. The Purist’s Choice: CZ 457 Varmint MTR

The CZ 457 Varmint MTR (Match Target Rifle) is widely considered the most accurate “traditional” rifle in the lineup. It is designed for the benchrest shooter who prefers the feel of a high-end wood stock but demands modern mechanical precision.

  • Match Chamber: As the name implies, this was the first 457 to feature the tight Match Chamber.
  • Heavy Cold-Hammer-Forged Barrel: It features a 20.5-inch, thick-walled varmint barrel that resists heat stringing and provides the harmonic stability needed for long strings of fire.
  • Vertical Grip Walnut Stock: The MTR stock is distinct; it features a Turkish walnut vertical grip and a wide, flat forend that sits perfectly on a front rest or sandbag.
  • Performance: In ideal conditions with the right lot of ammunition, the MTR is capable of producing 5-shot groups at 50 yards that measure under 0.25 inches.

2. The Competition King: CZ 457 LRP

For shooters entering the world of NRL22 or PRS Rimfire, the CZ 457 LRP (Long Range Precision) is the accuracy leader. It takes the mechanical heart of the MTR and places it in a specialized stock designed for positional shooting.

  • Fluted Match Barrel: The LRP utilizes a 20-inch heavy fluted barrel with a match chamber. The fluting sheds weight while increasing surface area for cooling, and it comes factory-threaded (1/2×28) for a muzzle brake or suppressor.
  • Premium Ergonomics: The LRP stock is fully adjustable for length of pull (LOP) and comb height. It also features a “bag rider” on the buttstock, which is essential for stability when shooting from a rear bag.
  • 25 MOA Rail: Recognizing that this rifle is built for targets out to 200+ yards, CZ includes a 25 MOA Picatinny rail from the factory, allowing shooters to dial for elevation at extreme rimfire distances.

3. The Modern Alternative: CZ 457 Varmint Precision Chassis

While not traditionally “wood-stocked,” the Precision Chassis model (often found in the MDT LSS or CZ’s own aluminum chassis) offers a different path to accuracy. By bedding the 457 action into a rigid aluminum chassis, the rifle eliminates the variables of wood swelling or compression. When paired with the heavy varmint barrel, this model offers a level of shot-to-shot consistency that is hard to beat in humid or changing environments.

Which Model Should You Choose?

If your goal is absolute precision, you must choose a model with the Match Chamber.

  • Choose the Varmint MTR if you want a dedicated benchrest rifle with a world-class walnut stock.
  • Choose the LRP if you are a competitive shooter who needs an adjustable stock and a barrel ready for long-range dialing.
  • Choose the Varmint Precision Chassis if you prefer a modern, modular tactical feel with maximum structural rigidity.

Regardless of the model, the CZ 457’s modularity means that if you ever shoot out a barrel or want to chase even smaller groups, you can easily swap the factory barrel for a custom-contoured match barrel from LILJA or IBI, making the 457 a platform that can grow with your skill level.
