Browning X-Bolt 2: The Next Generation of “Total Accuracy”

The Browning X-Bolt 2 is the highly anticipated evolution of the original X-Bolt, a rifle that defined the modern production bolt-action category. Released for 2024 and expanded into 2026, the X-Bolt 2 does not attempt to reinvent the wheel; instead, it refines nearly every point of contact between the shooter and the rifle. While it retains the signature 60-degree bolt lift and X-Lock mounting system, the X-Bolt 2 introduces a new level of modularity and mechanical smoothness.

Key Enhancements over the Original X-Bolt

Browning focused on three main pillars for the Gen 2 update: “Shooter Interface,” “Mechanical Smoothness,” and “Trigger Performance.”

  • The Vari-Tech Stock: This is the most visible upgrade. The new composite stock features modularity previously only found in the aftermarket. It allows for user-adjustable length of pull (LOP) and comb height, and even includes interchangeable pistol grip modules (allowing you to swap between a traditional sporter grip and a vertical target-style grip).
  • Redesigned Action & Bolt: The receiver has been “beefed up” with additional bolt guidance surface area (the raceway) to eliminate the slight “binding” some felt in the original. The bolt itself features deep spiral fluting and a new, more ergonomic, rounded triangular bolt knob that is significantly easier to manipulate under speed.
  • The DLX Trigger: Replacing the Feather Trigger, the new DLX Trigger is a multi-lever design that offers zero creep and zero overtravel. It is externally adjustable down to 3 lbs (or 2.5 lbs on Target models), providing a crisp, match-grade break right out of the box.
  • Plus Magazine System: Featured on many Long Range and Target models, this system increases magazine capacity by two rounds while maintaining a center-feed design for smoother cartridge transitions.

Popular Browning X-Bolt 2 Variations

1. X-Bolt 2 Speed (and Speed Carbon Fiber)

The “Speed” series is the versatile workhorse of the lineup. It features a Smoked Bronze Cerakote finish and the Vari-Tech stock in OVIX camouflage. The “Carbon Fiber” version upgrades the barrel to a Preferred Barrel carbon-wrapped unit, drastically reducing weight while maintaining stiffness for long-range strings of fire.

2. X-Bolt 2 Pro McMillan

This is the “semi-custom” tier of the X-Bolt 2. It bypasses the Vari-Tech stock in favor of a specialized McMillan Game Warden 2.0 carbon fiber stock. This model is designed for the mountain hunter who wants the lightest possible platform with the rigidity of a professional-grade stock.

3. X-Bolt 2 Hunter

For the traditionalist, the Hunter model retains the classic Grade I Black Walnut stock and matte blued steel. While it lacks the Vari-Tech adjustability, it includes the new DLX trigger and the smoother redesigned action, providing a modernized feel in a timeless aesthetic.

4. X-Bolt 2 Target

Designed for the PRS and long-range competition world, the Target version utilizes a heavier receiver, a 10-round MDT-style magazine, and a specialized Target DLX Trigger adjustable down to 2 lbs. It often includes an integrated 20 MOA Picatinny rail for long-distance optics.

5. X-Bolt 2 All Purpose

A new addition for 2026, the All Purpose model features a heavy sporter barrel profile and a more compact 18″ to 20″ barrel length. It is designed to be a “ranch rifle” or suppressor-ready platform that balances easily and fits well in a vehicle or thick brush.
